Summer Honeybees

June 29, 2014 by Kristen

The blackberries are blooming and the bees have been busy! It’s a good thing too, we’ve been pretty busy ourselves and haven’t been able to get into the hives as often as we did in the spring. I think we’re also starting to get the hang of this whole “bee keeping” thing and so we’re not as over-protective as we were at the beginning. When you begin to understand that it’s not about any one bee, but instead about the total organism of the hive, you trust that they know how to keep themselves going with very little human intervention.

The weather was great last week, so we figured it was time to check in on Noir (the left hive) and Gris (the right hive). From outside of the hives things look good! The bees are always on a mission and the crowding at the entrance was starting to get a little crazy, think “clouds of bees” waiting to get in, so we removed the excluder and now the bees can come and go all along the bottom entrance as oppose to just one three inch slot.

Ray’s Produce and a Raspberry Pie

June 26, 2014 by Kristen

Near the end of last summer we discovered Ray’s Produce stand located on the corner of OR99W and Highway 240 at the west end of Newberg. Ray’s has a tremendous variety of fresh fruits and vegetables with some of the best prices in town. We typically go to the grocery store and on our way home stop at Ray’s to buy all the produce we need for the week.

2014 Vanderbilt Baseball College World Series Champions!

June 25, 2014 by Kristen

I am such a proud Vanderbilt alumni! As a former Vandy athlete I will tell you that winning a National Championship is the ultimate prize that you grind toward all year long. Early morning lifts in the weight room, afternoon practice, late nights studying…all of that work pays off in one way or another. We’ve come close a few times, but watching our baseball team get it done tonight and win a National Championship is something I will always remember! The fight of a team. together. to the end.  #AnchorDown #CWS #VandyBoys

Pizza Making Class in Wine Country

June 23, 2014 by Kristen

We love the wood fired pizza made by the wonderful people at Red Hills Market! So when The Renaissance Man saw a flier for a pizza making class led by Red Hills Market, paired with a wine tasting at Winter’s Hill Vineyard, we reserved a spot and marked our calendars. Saturday was such a beautiful day and it was our first time visiting Winter’s Hill Vineyard.

Winter’s Hill Vineyard is located in the Dundee Hills, and as you drive toward the tasting room you meander down Hilltop Lane past thirty-five acres of sustainably farmed vineyards. What really struck me were the breathtaking views looking out southwest toward McMinnville.

Part Three: Gravel Path Construction “The Icing”

June 22, 2014 by Kristen

The path is complete! The path is complete!

All I want to do is run around our neighborhood like the town crier and let everyone know it’s done. It’s been one heck of a busy week, but it’s done. Check out Part One and Part Two for the whole story!

I went to work on Friday, and while away, the gravel was moved into place by The Renaissance Man and one of his good friends from college. Moving concrete might be bad, but moving 1/4 minus gravel is even worse. With the lack of voids due to gravel size, this becomes some of the heaviest wheelbarrow loads you’ll ever make.

Part Two: Gravel Path Construction

June 21, 2014 by Kristen

The Renaissance Man was taking a few days off of work, and so we decided to target this week to finish off the path. This is where we left off, and you can read Part One of the Gravel Path Construction to get up to speed. Originally I was going to do a two part series, but this project had too many steps, so look for Part Three of the Gravel Path Construction tomorrow for the final product!

Bonaventura Italian Deli

June 19, 2014 by Kristen

We had a lazy Sunday afternoon, and to be honest, I wish they all could be that way. A late afternoon lunch-dinner, “linner”? sounded perfect, so on our way to do some grocery shopping we stopped in at Bonaventura Italian Deli. Like many restaurants in Newberg, we’d driven by but just hadn’t stopped yet. On weekends it’s always busy and has a great street presence with outdoor seating.

Ready for Lettuce!

June 17, 2014 by Kristen

I’m excited to report on our very first garden! The Renaissance Man and I have both lived in apartments since college, and while we grew things in pots on our patios, we never had the space to do anything besides a tomato plant and strawberries.

This year we planted our garden in early May. I went all out with lettuces and we’ve got kale, spinach, butter lettuce, and arugula. We also planted carrots, parsnips, tomatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, snow peas, and bush beans. I’ve been taking photos of the garden to record the progress, and we’ve just started eating some lettuce!

Lady Fingers for Father’s Day

June 15, 2014 by Kristen

My Grandpa John loved lady fingers. He lived out at the Oregon Coast and would drive all the way to the Home Baking Company in Astoria, Oregon for cinnamon toast and lady fingers. I remember his big worn hands delicately holding lady fingers and nibbling on them with his pinky in the air, always with a smile.

As I rolled down the produce isle at the grocery store, I got to the end cap with strawberries and there was a package of lady fingers. I smiled, thought of my Grandpa, and decided to grab them.

Landscaping the Back Retaining Wall

June 14, 2014 by Kristen

I can hardly believe it’s been a week since we worked on the landscaping for the back retaining wall. Time flies, but I’m sure glad it’s done!

Last Saturday my Dad came over to the house for the day since my Mom was away on a trip to Sunriver. We didn’t have anything specific planned, but we did have quite a few plants that were starting to melt in the summer heat in their little black plastic pots. We ended up in the backyard, and the retaining wall at the back seemed like the easiest place to make a big difference and get things into the ground.
